UNH NSE Application & Placement Process

Get Started

UNH NSE students at the Alamo
  • Schedule an appointment with the UNH NSE Coordinator.  Together you'll review how the program works, your campus choices and the application timeline.
  • In your meeting, you will discuss eligibility, the placement process, timeline, how to find the perfect campus for your needs, cost, course equivalencies and more.
  • Using your UNH username and password, create an account on UNH-Via, (click the blue box that says "Go To Portal").  Search "National Student Exchange" and review the three options: US, US territories, and Canada.  Select the one that best fits your needs, select "Apply" and submit when ready.  Download the Study Away Eligibility Form, fill that out and send to your College Dean's Office (instructions are on the form.)
  • The UNH-Via site will primarily be used to manage your exchange related paperwork once you are offered a placement.

Research Exchange Campuses

A great exchange experience requires good research, flexibility, and communication with your academic advisor and NSE Coordinators.

  • Research & select 3-5 campuses that meet your academic and personal goals.
    •   Remember that UNH is on the HOME school tuition plan (formerly called Plan B) only.
    •   Some campuses are more popular and therefore more competitive than others. Talk with your NSE Coordinator about selecting back up campuses.
  • Look through each school's NSE Profile as well as the official school website, social media sites, and course catalog of your top choices to get a good sense of the campus culture.
  • Check out this quick tutorial video on how to make sure you've researched your campuses well.

Apply at NSE.org

After you've completed your research...

  • Apply at nse.org.  You don't have to finish your application in one sitting; just save and come back to it later.
  • When you are ready to hit the submit button, you will be sent a link for the NSE application fee payment ($150).   Once that is paid, you will be entered into the NSE Placement System.
  • The UNH NSE priority deadline for 2025-2026 exchanges is March 1, 2025 by 4 p.m.  Applying by this deadline gives you the best shot at your first choice campus.
  • If you miss that date, don't panic!  There will still be dozens of campuses available after, just maybe not some of the most competitive ones. Contact the NSE Coordinator for an updated list.

What Happens Next?

Adventure Awaits

  • Preliminary placements are made in early March and you will be notified before Spring Break.
  • Applicants are only offered one placement: The NSE Coordinator tries for the first choice and if that is not available, the coordinator continues down your list of schools in the priority they are listed. Placements are not guaranteed, and are determined by many factors at each host campus, such as their outgoing numbers, course availability, housing, and other factors. Applicants should work closely with the UNH NSE Coordinator to review past placement statistics to determine likelihood of acceptance.
  • Students who apply by the NSE Priority Deadline will be notified of their exchange site by March 10. They will then meet with the NSE Coordinator shortly thereafter to begin the necessary paperwork for participating in National Student Exchange, enrolling in the host campus, and completing course planning forms.
